HSCP Training of Trainers (TOT): January 30-February 3, 2012  (27 hours of CEUs–3 more CEUs than before).  This intensive training experience intends to give you all you need to begin training others in CDOI and/or implementing CDOI in your agencies. And it provides the first step in becoming an HSCP Certified Trainer of CDOI. No waffling here. No testing the opinion polls or relying on “experts” who have never done an hour of therapy to tell you what to do to improve your practice. It starts with the common factors, and understanding the research that supports these pantheoretical elements that account for therapeutic transformation across models and schools of thought. This includes a thorough knowledge of the empirical research about evidence based treatments, and more importantly, how to understand and help others to understand, what can and cannot be claimed about model effectiveness. That’s the client directed part (the client’s resources and resiliencies, the client’s view of the alliance, and the client’s hope for recovery). Armed with this information, annotated PowerPoint presentations (including skill building role plays of the three skills of client directed work) will enable you make maximum impact at your agency and beyond.

Then there is the outcome informed part, truly a revolutionary development in the field for consumers and therapists, that we call the Partners for Change Outcome Mangement System or PCOMS. A complete coverage of the research supporting PCOMS and client based feedback is essential to conducting training and implementing the ORS and SRS, as well as understanding data collection and management. Other topics will include agency implementation and what I call supervision for a change—supervision that intends to help both clients benefit from services and therapists accelerate their development and effectiveness. Supervision is key to implementation and therapist growth, and participants will walk away with the know how to facilitate both. Once again, annotated PowerPoint presentations which include the skill building role plays of the three skills of outcome informed work will provide the means for you to make a difference when you return to work.

This will be a rigorous 27 hours of training limited to only 20 participants. Readings will be circulated in advance and participants will be tested daily (Just kidding about the testing part! But you will be expected to read, study, and discuss the concepts). Given that this week intends to prepare participants to train, implement, consult, and supervise, folks should already be well versed in CDOI and already using the ORS and SRS. Through a combination of didactic presentations, training exercises/practice, and direct feedback, participants will learn the essentials of training and implementing CDOI ideas and practices. Training begins on Monday, the 30th at 9AM and ends on Friday the 3rd at noon.  Detailed agendas and reading materials will be emailed before November 30.

Participants of the TOT will receive training kits that include:

Subscription to CDOI Members Site (a $120 value)Barry’s PowerPoint presentations for the whole weekAnnotated PowerPoint presentations

Administration and scoring manual of the ORS/SRS (a $39.95)

The Revised 2010 Edition of the CDOI Manual which covers the whole gamut from clinical implementation to supervision and agency implementation—Heroic Clients, Heroic Agencies (a $39.95 value)

Certificate of attendance and 27 hours of CEUs

We are also going to have a lot fun in sunny, beautiful South Florida—dinner at Barry’s favorite beach restaurant, and a night of that famous South Florida night life.

Just $1195 US for 27 hours of small group intensive training so that you can teach and implement client directed outcome informed ideas and practices as well as PCOMS.

Note: There is a $50 cancelation processing fee. The 2012 TOT is full.

Here’s what participants said about the 2011 TOT Conference:

The TOT conference provided a unique opportunity to work closely with Barry and other professionals who share a commitment to the principles of CDOI. With his trademark enthusiasm, Barry outlined the empirical case for the common factors and addressed how to confront the challenges of CDOI implementation at the agency level. Additionally, the invited guests were stellar! Bob Bohanske’s data is compelling enough to convince anyone who doubts the utility of CDOI. The presentation by Jacqueline Sparks on the relationship between CDOI and social justice demonstrated the broader significance of client-directed practice for the world of “mental health.” The experience allowed me to return to my agency refreshed and with greater confidence as we continue to privilege the client’s voice by implementing CDOI.  Robert Nesbit

I attended the CDOI, Train the Trainer Course January 31-February 4th, 2011 in West Palm Beach Florida.  Firstly, coming from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where the average winter temperature is …“freezing”… attending training in the tropical climate and beautiful beach town environment was a great benefit and a source of envy for my colleagues.  The training itself was exceptional.  Although the Client Directed Outcome Informed Approach was first introduced to our health region in 2006 and implemented in some of our service areas in 2008, I went to the training with very basic knowledge about what CDOI was all about.   It was a privilege to learn from Barry Duncan.   His informal approach, use of humour, knowledge, passion and real life examples both from a clinical and research perspective allowed for a comprehensive learning experience.  In addition to learning from Barry himself, author, scholar and clinician extraordinaire, we were given the opportunity to learn from the experiences of additional scholars/clinicians Bob Bohanske and Jacqueline Sparks which further advanced my understanding of how the application of CDOI has been utilized to benefit clients, clinicians and agencies as a whole.  Sharing clinical stories and implementation experiences with fellow participants was enriching as well.  My fellow participants were a wealth of knowledge with diverse clinical and administrative backgrounds.  I came to the training with some scepticism and fear about my ability to disseminate and promote the use of CDOI in my clinical setting and left with a renewed passion and confidence for inspiring others to privilege the client’s voice. Although I lack experience as a trainer, I am confident that I can contact Barry or a heroic agency listed on the Heart and Soul of Change Website for guidance and support when I encounter difficulties.  Through the training, I feel more excited and committed to utilize the resources made available through the website to advance my own skills and the skills of the clinicians I work with.  Not only was the training educational and inspirational, it was allot of fun-BB Kings and connecting with Barry and the other Train the Trainer participants after “school”-was a great time!!I would definitely recommend this training to others.  Karyn Kawula

The 2011 TOT conference allowed me to become immersed in the language and culture of CDOI.  The clinically enriching presentations and the discussions fostered a new awareness of the power of the client and potency of the collaborative relationship that facilitates change.  Immediately after the conference, I began using the tools I learned to enhance my practice.  Darren Aboyoun

The Training of the Trainers workshop was definitely worth the time and expense.  Barry and his colleagues provided a comprehensive, in depth presentation of the philosophy, research basis, and practice of CDOI.  They also practiced what they preached by soliciting the feedback of all workshop participants and responding to it by adapting the training to our stated needs.  In addition, my fellow participants helped create a dynamic and supportive, yet challenging, learning environment by sharing their opinions, critiques and experiences regarding CDOI.  I left the workshop feeling more confident in the CDOI approach’s utility and in my ability to promote CDOI in the clinic where I practice.  I am looking forward to future trainings and encourage others to consider attending as well.  Daniel Gunnarson

The Train the Trainer conference was a valuable experience for me in many regards. I achieved my goals of solidifying my understanding of the CDOI concepts, conceptualizing and designing an implementation strategy for my agency, and sharpening my presentation material and skills as I train others in this approach. The contribution from the other participants in the conference was very helpful and I look forward to staying in touch with everyone for the purpose of sharing my implementation successes and challenges and learning from their experiences. Barry did a great job of pulling the conference together and meeting the needs of the participants. Jim Szabo
