Jesse Owen, Ph.D. is the Research Director of the Heart and Soul of Change Project and committed to the dissemination of client directed, outcome informed ideas via research. Dr. Owen is assistant professor in the Education and Counseling Psychology Department, University of Louisville. He is the incoming associate editor for Psychotherapy, APA’s Division 29 (Psychotherapy) flagship journal. His research interests include romantic relationships, couples therapy, and common factors in psychotherapy. Jesse collaborated with Barry, Jacqueline, and Morten on several submitted articles arising from the Norway Feedback Study and is a key player, along with Jeff Reese, in several ongoing research projects. Winner: Cynthia Handrup (Nursing Practice doctoral student, Univ. of Colorado at Denver) - The Effects of Therapeutic Alliance on Psychotherapy Outcomes: This study uses the ORS/SRS to investigate the therapeutic alliance between psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurses (APN) and psychotherapy clients in an outpatient setting looking specifically at attrition rates. Pilot results showed a dramatic reduction in attrition rates in clients whose APNs used the ORS/SRS. Congratualtions Cynthia!

The Heart and Soul of Change Research Award for the best study addressing client-directed outcome-informed clinical practice. The study must specifically address some aspect of common factors or consumer driven outcomes management. This award is intended for students, interns, early career professors, or front line clinicians who demonstrate research excellence on a topic of their choosing or from the following list:
The alliance and outcome using the ORS and SRS ; Client theory of change; Early change predicting later change; common factors and change; Data mining projects from data in the public domain—for example, looking at Project Match regarding client pre-treatment beliefs about drinking and outcome or looking at existing studies and early change, etc; The nuances of feedback including feedback effects in different settings and different populations; Feedback and supervision; Feedback and therapist development
The Research Award recipient will receive $1000 and a free registration to the next Heart and Soul of Change Conference. Recipient will also be invited to share his or her results as a Poster Presentation at the Conference.
Requirements include:
• Project must be completed within 2 years after the award funds are received.
• Recipient must be interested in publishing the study in a peer reviewed journal.
• Submissions should be in the form of a 2-page prospectus that clarifies how the proposed research connects to client directed outcome informed clinical work.
The winner will be contacted by March 1 2012, as well as several others who will be invited to present their posters at the conference. Posters should follow APA guidelines.
The deadline for entries is February 1, 2012.
